118 Member States support the Joint Statement initiated by the Co-Chairs of the Group of Friends of Sport for Sustainable Development, H.E. Ms. Isabelle PICCO and H.E. Ms. Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-THANI, Permanent Representatives of the Principality of Monaco and of the State of Qatar to the United Nations.

Underscoring the essential role of sport in the current situation and as recommended by WHO, the regular practice of sport and physical activity has been particularly important during the lockdown and must remain so in the future.

As per the biennial General Assembly resolution on sport, which is also co-facilitated by Monaco, the Joint Statement highlights the important contribution of sport for sustainable development, in particular for health, education, peaceful societies and socioeconomic development.

While many professional and amateur sporting events had to be cancelled or postponed, the efforts undertaken by all stakeholders, such as the International Olympic Committee as well as international and national sport Federations and entities must be welcomed and supported, so these events are symbols of unity and solidarity when they can take place.
