The Permanent Mission of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations in New York took part in the 58th session of the Commission for Social Development, which was held from February 10 to 19, 2020. The priority theme: "Affordable housing and social protection systems for all to address homelessness,” saw this subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council address the issue of homelessness for the first time.

Mr. Cédric BRAQUETTI, Deputy Permanent Representative, joined the general debate to present Monaco’s proactive and people-centered social and healthcare policies.

The session also resulted in the adoption of an important resolution on homelessness. The Monegasque delegation, aware of the importance of sport, in particular for homeless people, to maintain a social bond, as well as physical and mental health, which are essential to foster integration, obtained the inclusion of this reference * in the resolution on the main theme.

* Paragraph 25 of resolution E/CN.5/2020/L.5: “Recognizes the importance of the practice of sport and physical activity for homeless people, including youth and students facing homelessness, and of access to sport infrastructure, and highlights that sport can provide important social benefits to homeless people as well as opportunities to overcome challenges linked to homelessness, social exclusion and lack of perspectives.”
