A virtual meeting of the Group of Friends on Sport, co-chaired by the Permanent Representations of Monaco and Qatar, was held on 2 December 2021 and attended by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Permanent Representative of China, whose country is hosting the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2022. On the same day, the General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal.

IOC President Dr Thomas Bach hailed the hosting of the Olympic Games in Tokyo earlier this year during a particularly difficult time, as well as the preparations for the Beijing Games. He also reiterated the importance of solidarity and noted that the IOC was committed through numerous partnerships to promoting sustainable development and climate action.

In her speech to the General Assembly, H.E. Ms Isabelle Picco said that the principles in the United Nations Charter and the Olympic values shared much in common, and that the IOC played a critical leadership role. She added that our collective response to the challenges we face should be guided by solidarity and team spirit, before concluding: “in sport, as in multilateralism, we win together or lose together.”
