On 11th October, for the International Day of the Girl Child, the Permanent Mission of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations organized, in partnership with the non-governmental organization "Girl Rising" and the company "Haven Hill", the screening of the short film "Brave Girl Rising" at the UN Economic and Social Council Chamber.

Following the story of Nasro, a 17-year-old refugee, this 20-minute film, written by a refugee, interpreted by refugees and produced in collaboration with refugees, highlights the power of education.

A discussion, moderated by Isha Sesay, journalist from Sierra Leone, presented the experiences of two refugee women: Sandra Uwiringiyimana from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nargis Bigzad from Afghanistan. Their testimony highlighted the preponderant role of education in their respective journeys: a 10-year-old child who witnessed massacres and a young interpreter for US forces.

In her words of welcome, H.E. Mrs. Picco, Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations, emphasized the message related by the heroine of "Brave Girl Rising": sisterhood and commitment.

Statements were also made by Ms. Marie-Paule Roudil, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York, Ms. Dana Sleiman, UNHCR Public Information Officer, and Ms. Lauren Rumble, Senior Adviser on HIV / AIDS issues, gender and development of UNICEF.

As 17 million girls are forcibly displaced around the world, this event is a message of hope and renewed commitment to their empowerment through education, so that each can reach their full potential and fulfill their dreams.
