The Permanent Mission of Monaco to the UN receives the President of the International Olympic Committee and the President of the Organising Committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games
On Monday 9 December, prior to the adoption by the General Assembly of a resolution on the Olympic Truce, a meeting of the Group of Friends of Sport for Sustainable Development was held at the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations in New York. The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dr. Thomas Bach, and the President of the Organising Committee of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mr. Yoshiro Mori, shared issues relating to the forthcoming Games with members of the Group. The Permanent Observer of the IOC to the United Nations, Mr. Luis Moreno, who is a member of the IOC and President of the Inter-American Development Bank, was taking part for the first time in a meeting of the Group.
From gender equality among athletes to the participation of a team of refugees, from carbon neutrality to the use of recycled marine plastics to build podiums, these dignitaries all reiterated their commitment to the Olympic ideal and the values of unity, inclusion and universality it embodies.
The adopted resolution calls for the observance of the Olympic Truce and mentions Japan's gratitude to the international community for its solidarity after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. It should be noted that the medals will be made of recycled metals from buildings used in the recovery efforts.
In her address to the General Assembly, H.E. Ms. Isabelle Picco, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations, supported the International Olympic Committee's commitment, particularly with regard to gender equality and the promotion of public policies. She recalled the many actions of the Permanent Mission to promote the contribution of sport to sustainable development and expressed the wish that the Games would be successful for the athletes who bring the Olympic spirit and ideal to life.
